Following the Government's introduction of the Friends and Family Test question (FFT) in 2013, NHS England introduced the Friends and Family Test for staff in addition to the Annual Staff Survey. This gives all NHS staff the opportunity to have their say on the place where they work at least once a year. King's opens the Staff Friends and Family Test for all staff to complete three times per year, and includes the questions in the Annual Staff Survey which takes place during October and November each year.
The staff test reflects the NHS Friends and Family Test for patients. It asks two quick questions:
For both questions, you are asked to score ranging from ‘extremely unlikely’ to ‘extremely likely’.
All survey responses are confidential and are collated by an external organisation.
Results will be made available to the Trust and can be broken down but only to a minimum of 11 staff members. This ensures that it is restricted and cannot be broken down to individuals. When comments are received in the survey, all the data variables will be removed so that it isn't possible to identify any staff member through what they have said.
However, the Test is much more than just a score. It strengthens staff and patients’ voices, and acts as a catalyst to ask ‘why?’, ‘why have we been awarded this score?’ and ‘what does this feedback tell us?’. What you say is important because we use what you tell us to improve both King’s as a workplace which values and supports its staff; and to improve care for our patients.

What is Staff Family and Friends Test?
You will receive an email from Picker, the survey provider (from email address: picker_surveys@picker.org) which contains a unique link to complete the survey to you to ensure that nobody can fill in a survey more than once. Please remember you can also complete it at home or using a mobile device or tablet with internet access if you prefer.
This year, in addition to asking if you would recommend Kings as a place to receive treatment and work we are also asking additional questions around your appraisal, your career development and your team.
We want to hear your honest opinions on how you are feeling about your work and the Trust. The higher the survey response rate the more confident we can be that the feedback provided is representative of most people working at King’s.
Please ensure your work email is recorded on the electronic staff record system to ensure you review your link to complete the survey.
What are our results?
The table below shows the results for the last two years, including both the results for the staff family and friends test and the results for these questions when asked in the quarter 3 staff survey. The results show a slight decline in the last 2 years of staff who would recommend the trust as a place to receive care, and a slight increase of staff who would recommend the trust as a place to work.

In 2018/19 Quarter 1 King’s asked 2 additional questions; ‘I feel part of, and supported, by my team’, to which 70.2% of staff agreed, and ‘I feel able to challenge unacceptable behaviour from colleagues’ to which 62.5% of staff agreed.
How do we plan to use the feedback?
We will be using the feedback from the FFT and the annual survey to work with colleagues across the Trust to build on and develop a great working environment which allows people to reach their full potential and enable King's to be a great hospital.
