The pay-grade change
As part of the Junior Doctor contract refresh, from the 1st October 2020 there will now be a Nodal 5 salary point on the 2016 pay-scales. Prior to this there were 4 Nodal points (1-4) but a 5th has now been added to recognise the contribution of senior trainees as outlined below:

Senior Clinical Fellow eligibility for a Nodal 5 (MT05) basic salary
To place a new or existing SCF on this pay-grade, we would expect the below checks/confirmations to have been completed:
1. Experience
We would expect the SCF to have at least 7 years post-graduate experience, with at least 3 years working at a SCF/Registrar level.
2. Knowledge and Skills
The Clinical Lead for the recruitment process (new SCFs) or Clinical Supervisor (existing SCFs) should confirm the doctor has the knowledge and skills they would expect of an ST6+ trainee.
3. Level of the SCF role
The Clinical Lead for the recruitment process (new SCFs) or Clinical Supervisor (existing SCFs) will also need to confirm they will be working at an ST6+ level. If the SCF role only involves working at an ST3-5 level, the SCF will not be entitled to the Nodal 5 (MT05) salary even if they meet the criteria in points 1 and 2.

The below points will also need to be incorporated into recruitment processes for SCF posts.

Position number pay-grades – SCF posts
- To put an SCF on the MT05 (Nodal 5) pay-grade once confirmed as eligible, you will need to request the position number pay-grade to be amended from MT04 to MT05 via Workforce Information: kch-tr.WFInfo@nhs.net (please include the effective date of the change in your request). For current SCFs a contractual change form will need to be submitted to Capita once the pay-grade has been updated.
- Trainees in a HEE rotational will have individual pay-grades for their training grade, so the ST6-8 pay-grades (MS06/7/8) have been updated automatically on ESR and so they will be paid the correct Nodal 5 basic salary.
The below points will also need to be incorporated into recruitment processes for SCF posts.

- If the SCF post would involve working at an ST6+ level, it could be advertised with the Nodal 4 & 5 salary point range: £49,036 - £52,036. The success candidate(s) would need to meet the above criteria to be placed on the higher (Nodal 5 / MT05) basic salary though.
- If any of your position numbers are changed to the MT05 pay-grade, when that doctor leaves if the replacement is not eligible for this higher salary the pay-grade for the position number will need to be changed back to MT04 by contacting Workforce Information: kch-tr.WFInfo@nhs.net (again including the effective date for the position to be changed back to MT04)
