Types of Parental Leave
Maternity/Adoption Leave
Employees who are due to become the parent of a child by birth, adoption or a surrogacy arrangement are entitled to take up to 52 weeks’ leave regardless of their length of service which includes 2 weeks’ compulsory leave.
New Parent Support Leave (Paternity Leave)
Employees are eligible to take New Parent Support Leave following the birth of adoption of a child who have, or expect to have, responsibility for the baby’s upbringing. The entitlement is the same in the event of multiple birth/adoption.
Shared Parental Leave
Eligible mothers, fathers, partners and adopters are able to choose how to share time off work after their child is born or placed for adoption. Shared Parental Leave is designed to give parents more flexibility in how to share the care of their child in the first year following birth or adoption.
Unpaid Parental Leave
Unpaid parental leave allows parents to take time off to look after a child or make arrangements for the child’s welfare. This entitlement also applies to parent who have adopted children. This type of leave may be taken by a parent during the child's first 18 years.
Maternity/Adoption Leave
The policy below provides detailed guidance on applying for Maternity/Adoption Leave.
To apply for Maternity/Adoption Leave you need to complete the Maternity Leave Request Form or the Paternity Leave Request Form and get it authorised by your manager. You must then send it along with your original MAT B1 form/matching certificate to Capita for processing.
New Parent Support Leave (Paternity Leave)
The Parents Policy provides detailed guidance on applying for New Parent Support Leave.
To apply for New Parent Support Leave you need to complete the Paternity Leave Form and get it authorised by your manager. You must then send it along with relevant HRMC application form (SC3 or SC4, or SC5) to Capita for processing.
Shared Parental Leave
The Parents Policy provides detailed guidance on eligibility criteria for applying for Shared Parental Leave.
To apply for Shared Parental Leave you will need to complete the Shared Parental Leave Form and get it authorised by your manager. If the mother or primary adopter if applying for Shared Parental Leave, they will need to complete the Return from Maternity or Adoption Leave form prior to completing the Application form for Shared Parental Leave at least 8 week’s prior to the end of the leave period.
Unpaid Parental Leave
The Parents Policy provides detailed guidance on unpaid parental leave.
Unpaid parental leave should be recorded on the HealthRoster and an Unpaid Leave Form submitted to Capita to notify that the employee's pay should be stopped for the period of parental leave.
